Why collaboration is key to quality international education
The global education landscape is in a state of uneasy and uncertain flux. There is a tacit admission that the world has been complacent and fallen short in the race to the 2030 SDG targets.
Dedicated educators, administrators, and leaders around the globe toil tirelessly, using their voices and platforms to generate positive change in their institutions and communities.
Still, progress in key areas continues to be hindered by shifts in policy and sentiment, the politicisation of student mobility, and the amplification of discourse and action that seeks to divide.
Challenging landscapes ⟿ increased demands ⟿ silos
Students and their caregivers, arguably responding as expected to the marketisation of education and demands that they must be work-ready, are increasingly discerning. In turn, they demand tangible returns on their time and investment. Meanwhile, despite impassioned efforts to champion access and inclusion, the divide grows for those left behind.
Ever-growing demands continue to pile on those working in education. Some of them are bureaucratic and detrimental. Many of them are worthy. Necessary. But, without the resources (time, staffing, funding) to succeed or without engendering the support and willingness of those tasked with delivering such initiatives through listening to their input, it is hardly surprising that so much work often does little good.
When the pressure is on, the inevitable silos we retreat into are understandable – but counterproductive. To truly innovate, we must actively cultivate a culture of collaboration and shared learning.
Global education in transition
Universities, new pathway providers, online learning platforms, schools, vocational colleges, and transnational education initiatives each operate with their own unique strengths, challenges, and perspectives. Yet, too often, these entities function in relative isolation, missing out on valuable opportunities to learn from each other’s successes and failures.
The potential for huge strides lies, if not in walls being broken down, in bridges being built. When a traditional university partners with an online learning provider to enhance accessibility and flexibility, when leadership at the “best” schools share their networks and resources to help those who are under-resourced and unconnected, together we can harness the collective wisdom and expertise of the entire sector to address challenges and unlock new possibilities.
“To truly innovate, we must actively cultivate a culture of collaboration and shared learning.”
Innovation: By fostering open dialogue between institutions, we can collectively identify effective technological pedagogies, address digital equity, and ensure that all students, regardless of their mode of study, receive quality educational experiences.
Sustainability: As the world grapples with the climate crisis, institutions can learn from each other’s initiatives, embedding sustainability principles into their curricula and operations and preparing students to be responsible global citizens.
Inclusion: Sharing best practices in creating accessible, welcoming learning environments and improving outcomes for diverse student populations in regional, national, and international contexts is essential for fostering true inclusion.
ASIC firmly believes in the power of collaboration to create the profound and enduring changes we need to see in international education, and we invite you to join us in Vietnam (October 15- 16th, 2025) for Global Education in Transition: Innovation, Inclusion, Sustainability for a Resilient Future.
Help build a brighter future!
A united front focused on partnerships for quality is essential for building a resilient future for international education. Our conferences represent a diverse cross-section of voices and provide a platform for fostering meaningful connections between leaders, educators, administrators, government representatives, and other stakeholders from across the globe.
